Elderly mother, daughter starve to death in apartment in northern Japan
TOKYO (AP) _ In a nation envied for its wealth, an elderly woman and her middle-aged daughter quietly starved to death as they waited for help from relatives, police said.
The mother, 75, and her 46-year-old daughter were found dead in their apartment in Koriyama, 120 miles northeast of Tokyo, said local police spokesman Yoichi Hiraki. Their names were not released.
The women apparently had died from malnutrition days earlier, Hiraki said.
They were discovered by relatives who visited the apartment Tuesday after they had received a letter from the daughter asking for money.
The women were not on welfare and there were no records of them visiting a hospital for any ailments in recent months.
In April 1996, a mother and her son starved to death in their apartment in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward. Their deaths went unnoticed for three weeks.
