Sununu signs bill responding to sales tax ruling

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire has passed legislation fighting back against a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for other states to collect sales tax from the state’s businesses.

The so-called Wayfair ruling effectively ending the requirement that a company have a “physical presence” in a state in order to collect sales taxes there. Republican Gov. Chris Sununu called for a special session last summer to respond with legislation, but it failed to pass the House. Another bill passed this session, and Sununu signed it Friday.

The bill creates hurdles for other states attempting to collect sales taxes in New Hampshire. Republicans praised it as key in protecting the “New Hampshire advantage.” Democrats pointed out that it didn’t pass until their party won control of the Legislature.
