Three Palestinians Dead In West Bank
JERICHO, West Bank (AP) _ An Islamic activist was shot and killed today in the PLO-run Jericho area, and the army said a second Palestinian was killed in the West Bank city of Hebron while preparing a bomb.
Another Palestinian was killed by masked men Wednesday.
Off the coast of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli navy shot at a fishing boat, seriously wounding two Palestinians after they sailed outside the designated fishing zone, the army said.
Family members said Ibrahim Yaghi, 27, was shot and killed on his way to work as a teacher at a vocational school at the Aqbat Jaber refugee camp outside Jericho, a town of 10,000 that has been under Palestinian self-rule since last May.
There was no immediate word on who was responsible for the shooting.
PLO police said the militant Hamas movement listed Yaghi as a member. Hamas opposes PLO chief Yasser Arafat’s peacemaking with Israel, and tensions between the two groups have escalated in recent weeks.
In the West Bank town of Hebron, still under Israeli military control, 18- year-old Eid Zughayar was killed while preparing a bomb, the army said.
Family members contested the Israeli version, saying Zughayar was shot to death by soldiers.
Hebron has been a flashpoint of Israeli-Palestinian tensions since the February massacre of 29 Palestinian worshippers by a Jewish settler at the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
Another Palestinian, Iyad Saed, 41, of Baka Sharkiya in the West Bank, was killed Wednesday by masked men who opened fire, Palestinian sources said.
Villagers said the man was suspected of collaborating with Israeli authorities. Two other suspected informers have been killed in the same area so far this month.
