Mom sentenced to prison after newborn given drugs
AMERICAN FORK, Utah (AP) — A Utah mother who pleaded guilty to allowing her boyfriend to give their newborn baby an addiction-treatment drug has been sentenced to prison.
The Deseret News reports Judge Roger Griffin rejected a recommendation to put 26-year-old Lacey Dawn Christenson on probation so she could work toward reuniting her family.
Christenson begged to stay out of prison, but the judge called the idea appalling. He sided with prosecutors said she’d chosen drugs over her family.
Griffin gave her back-to-back sentences, one of 1 to 15 years and another of six months to five years.
Her boyfriend was also sent to prison.
Police say the couple rubbed a crushed-up pill solution on the newborn’s gums because they feared she was born with opioid-drug dependence.
Authorities say two other children in the home tested positive for methamphetamine.
