LINCOLN — Services for Dean Magwire, 86, were Monday, Dec. 17, at Butherus Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln.

He died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at his home.

1932-2018

Dean (Irvin) Magwire was born Jan 7, 1932, in Tilden to Vester and Alma (Matzen) Magwire. He grew up on the family farm near Tilden and graduated from Tilden High School in 1950.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Army in December 1952, where he spent time in Texas and Missouri. He took time off during his enlistment to marry Marlene (Morisse) on Dec. 29, 1953, at St. Boniface Church in Elgin. The couple gave birth to their first child, Mark, while stationed in Mineral Wells, Texas. He was discharged in December 1954 and moved back to Elgin. Their additional four children — Jon, Craig, Gene and Margo — were born in the Neligh hospital, while living in Elgin.

Dean’s first job after the service was at the Elgin Bank. He eventually got involved in the insurance industry. After insurance-related positions in several Northeast Nebraska towns, he finally owned his own insurance agency in Neligh and then later in Lincoln, where he retired. In March 2003, he lost Marlene to cancer.

Dean then married Collette Tomandl in June 2004 in Lincoln. They lived together in Lincoln until he passed away on Dec. 13, 2018, at his home at the age of 86.

Survivors include his spouse, Colette Magwire of Lincoln; his children, Mark Magwire of Lincoln, Jon and Barb (Voborny) Magwire of Paris, Texas, Craig and Cindy (Knutson) Magwire of Lincoln, Gene and Sherry (Mefford) Magwire of Omaha and Margo (Magwire) Sawyer and John Barron of Lincoln; nine grandchildren: Toni Magwire, Mandy (Kelly) Polack, Amber (Zach) Bomberger, Dustin (Sarah) Magwire, Josh Magwire, Whitney (Anthony) Meyers, Logan Magwire, Ethan Sawyer and Ben Sawyer, as well as seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his siblings: Margaret Paulsen of O’Neill, Jack Magwire and spouse Maxine of Lincoln, Irene Martin of Neligh; his stepdaughters, Becky Campbell and Pam Turner, along with five stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Vester and Alma; his late spouse, Marlene Magwire; his sister, Florence Dittrich and spouse Emil; his brother, Raymond Magwire and spouse Margaret; his sister, Marian Lingenfelter and spouse Alfred; his brother, Mike Magwire and spouse Millie; his sister, Ruth Qualset and spouse Mike; and sister Euna. He also was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Edwin Paulsen and Eugene Martin; his daughter-in-law, Terri (O’Dell) Magwire; and two grandchildren, Brittni Magwire and Kyle Magwire.
