Cancellara Wins Time Trial
SERVIGLIANO, Italy (AP) _ Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won the fifth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico cycling race Sunday, a 12.4-mile individual time trial.
Cancellara’s time of 27 minutes, 37 seconds around a circuit that began and ended in Servigliano was 3 seconds faster than Leif Hoste of Belgium and 18 seconds ahead of Thomas Dekker of the Netherlands, who took the overall lead from Oscar Freire.
In the overall standings, Dekker holds a 14-second lead on Joerg Jaksche of Germany, who placed fourth in the stage.
Ivan Basso, a contender for the Tour de France, finished eighth, and Paolo Savoldelli, the defending Giro d’Italia champion, was ninth. Savoldelli is fourth overall, 40 seconds behind Dekker. Basso is seventh.
Snow caused organizers to replace Monday’s uphill finish to San Giacomo with a flatter route of 111 miles from San Benedetto del Tronto to Torricella Sicura. The weeklong race ends Tuesday in San Benedetto.
