Trump approves federal funding for Hawaii’s Hurricane Lane
HONOLULU (AP) — President Donald Trump has approved Hawaii’s request for a major disaster declaration for areas affected by Hurricane Lane.
The declaration announced in a statement from the White House Thursday authorizes federal agencies to assist the state’s recovery efforts.
The declaration provides federal funding to local governments and some private organizations to help recover from storm damage on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.
The declaration also provides some funding for future “hazard mitigation measures” in the islands.
Hawaii Gov. David Ige said in a statement that the approval will help the state recover more quickly. Another request for individual federal aid is still being considered.
Lane did not directly hit Hawaii, but heavy rains caused widespread flooding in the state.
