Two Votes for the Future
Last Saturday was one of those bright, crisp fall days that most of us New Englanders adore. I was volunteering that afternoon in Leominster, asking voters to help re-elect Natalie Higgins as our State Representative and to elect Sue Chalifoux Zephir to be our State Senator. I devote some of my limited free time to do this because these two thoughtful and dedicated women are proven champions for our community. They both know how to collaborate, compromise, and get things done -- without worrying about who gets credit for it. Most people I’ve talked to are supportive of Rep. Higgins and City Councilor Chalifoux Zephir and assure me they will be voting on November 6. But one person I spoke to on Lancaster Street gave a very different response. She said she was not going to vote anymore because she thinks her vote no longer matters. She and I talked for a bit about how discouraging recent elections have been -- I totally share her pain. I’m not always an optimist myself, but Natalie Higgins and Sue Chalifoux Zephir actually give me hope for the future. They are honorable, caring, and incredibly hard-working women who are willing to be our public servants.
