Children playing with loaded handgun led to shooting of 2: Police
Children handling a loaded handgun led to Sunday’s accidental shooting of a boy and an adult woman, Fort Wayne police said today.
Police identified the injured people as Jadonte Bailey, 4, and Joynieccia A. Bailey, 24. The boy is in critical condition while the woman’s condition was described as stable.
The shooting happened about 11:15 a.m. in the 4500 block of South Park Drive on the city’s southeast side.
Detectives determined children playing in the home found a loaded handgun and, while examining it, the firearm discharged, police said.
The round struck Jadonte Bailey and traveled through his body before hitting Joynieccia Bailey, who was asleep on a couch, police said.
“Fort Wayne police want to stress the importance of the proper storage of firearms that will help to prevent such tragedies to occur,” police said in a statement.
