Braves’ Galarraga Ejected in Brawl

August 22, 1998

ATLANTA (AP) _ Atlanta’s Andres Galarraga was ejected after he charged Los Angeles pitcher Darren Dreifort Saturday, setting off a second-inning brawl between the Braves and Dodgers.

After Galarraga was hit in the left thigh by Dreifort first pitch, he charged the mound and swung at Dreifort’s head as he lunged toward the pitcher but missed, and the two players fell to the ground.

Both benches emptied as players and coaches from both teams tried to break up the fight. After calm was restored, Galarraga was ejected and replaced by Greg Colbrunn.

Dreifort, who sustained cuts on his right elbow during the fight, was unable to continue pitching and was replaced by rookie Mike Judd.

In a game last Sunday in Los Angeles, Dreifort hit Galarraga in the second inning.

Galarraga set a Braves franchise modern-day record Tuesday by getting hit for the 21st time. After being hit in the seventh inning by San Francisco pitcher Julian Tavarez, Galarraga warned that he would charge the mound if he were hit again.

There was no immediate word on the significance of Dreifort’s injury.
