Rosa Parks Leaves Hospital

March 11, 1988

BALTIMORE (AP) _ Rosa L. Parks, who sparked the 1955 Alabama bus boycott, was discharged Friday from Johns Hopkins Hospital, a spokesman said.

Ms. Parks, 75, received a pacemaker Tuesday, said hospital spokesman Phil Kibak.

Ms. Parks, of Detroit, was in Baltimore for medical tests and to help plan a national birthday celebration scheduled for her in June, said spokesman Ghita Levine. She chose to undergo tests at Johns Hopkins at the request of Dr. Levi Watkins Jr., whom Ms. Parks met at a speaking engagement here in January, Levine said.

Nearly 33 years ago, Ms. Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Ala. She was arrested, and the black community retaliated by boycotting the buses.
