FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Tyrone Marshall scored in the 19th minute as the Miami Fusion began life without Carlos Valderrama with their first victory in regulation this year, beating the Kansas City Wizards 1-0 Saturday night.
Miami hadn’t led a game this season until Marshall ran onto a long cross from midfielder Henry Gutierrez and one-timed a shot past goalkeeper Chris Snitko.
It was Miami’s second consecutive victory without Valderrama, who was benched by coach Ivo Wortmann four games into the season amid accusations of ignoring instructions and playing his own tactical game plan.
Miami beat Dallas the day after Valderrama’s benching, and the mop-haired midfielder stayed away from the club thereafter. On Friday, Major League Soccer reassigned the Colombian World Cup star to the Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The Fusion (3-3) continued the worst start in franchise history for Kansas City (0-6).
The Wizards played their second game under interim coach Ken Fogarty, who returned to Lockhart Stadium 15 years after starring for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the defunct North American Soccer League. Fogarty took over as coach after Ron Newman resigned two weeks ago.
