Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to junior Sam White of Hurricane High School.
The 2018 high school golf season is off to a hot start as many
One standout golfer that helped the Redskins to a successful week was junior Sam White. White shot an individual 35 against GW and a match best 34 vs. Huntington in 9-hole team play. Playing as the No. 1 for his team, White has shot under par the last three rounds and is off to a hot start.
When asked about who motivates him Sam said, “Making it to the state tournament as a team and an individual is my goal for
this year. Last year, we were so close to making it as a team and fell short. We feel we have a great shot this year and want to prove it to ourselves that we belong.”
When asked about who inspires him he responded, “My mother inspires me more than anyone. She attends all my matches and is the best support staff I could ask for. She celebrates with me at my best and is there picking me back up when I am at my worst. I really appreciate the sacrifices my parents have made for me to play the game I love.”
The Redskins return all but one golfer from last year’s squad, and with their early season success, the Redskins can be expected to compete for a team state championship.
Camaraderie among the team has been a strong foundation as they generally have been known to play together and individually year round. The Redskins are hoping their experience works in their favor this year.
Head coach Dan McKinney and assistant coach Martina Hart have a strong nucleus of three juniors and three seniors rounding out the varsity squad.
When assistant coach Martina Hart was asked about Sam White’s play this year she replied, “Sam has embraced his position as one of the team leaders. He plays with confidence that has been reflected with him shooting under par the last three rounds. Sam has been a great team player. He and the other guys are very encouraging to each other and try to help each other improve their game.”
The Redskins will have one shot to make it to states as they have beat rivals Cabell Midland and Parkersburg in regional play. So far, the Redskins have beat them this year and hope to continue with their winning ways in pursuit of competing for a state title.
Sam currently has a 3.8 GPA and is the son of Hop and Nikki White. White is part of the Environmental Club and competes in regional golf tournaments year round. Sam says he is unsure of where he will continue his education, but would like to continue playing golf on the collegiate level and study radiology.
