DMC transit studies earn planning award

September 30, 2018

Efforts to redesign transportation in Rochester’s core can already be called award-winning.

Destination Medical Center, the city and SRF Consulting received an Innovation in Planning award this week from the Minnesota chapter of the American Planning Association

The award recognizes the Integrated Transit Studies, a city and DMC collaborative effort to help define the future of transportation needs in downtown Rochester. SRF is the consultant hired to oversee the effort.

The studies, which were presented to the DMC Corp. Board and Rochester City Council earlier this year, cite a need for a transportation solution that combines infrastructure and policies, programs. and incentives.

Among findings in the resulting report was a need to accommodate all types of users and modes, stating that bike and pedestrian networks should be increased without reducing traffic lanes.

The results also call for the creation of a Bus Rapid Transit system, which would provided dedicated buses on key routes to circulate people through the city’s core. The proposal is similar to a light-rail system on rubber tires.
