Cincinnati Bengals sign WR Darnay Scott for 1997

June 16, 1997

CINCINNATI (AP) _ Wide receiver Darnay Scott has signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, who said today they are trying to negotiate a long-term deal with him.

Scott accepted a $785,000 contract. He was the Bengals’ second-round draft choice in 1994, from San Diego State.

Scott caught 58 passes last year, his career high, for 833 yards receiving and five touchdowns. He became the first receiver in Bengals history to top 800 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons.

He was a restricted free agent this year. Under NFL rules, the Bengals’ $785,000 offer was sufficient that, if another team had given Scott a better contract and the Bengals had declined to match it, the other team then would have had to give Cincinnati a first-round draft pick as compensation.

``Negotiations are expected to continue that might get him signed to a longer deal,″ team spokesman Jack Brennan said.

There is no time frame for concluding those negotiations, Brennan said.
