AHMADABAD, India (AP) _ Police fired on a mob gathered in a Muslim neighborhood after a heavy night of religious rioting in western Indian, killing two people on Friday.

Two months of Hindu-Muslim violence in western Gujarat state has left at least 865 people dead.

The latest deaths came when a mob gathered in Juhapora neighborhood in Ahmadabad, Gujarat’s commercial hub, on Friday morning following another night of rioting between Hindus and Muslims.

Police opened fire in an attempt to disperse the crowd and two people were killed, said an officer at the state police control room on condition of anonymity.

The officer said it was not clear whether those killed were Hindus or Muslims.

The earlier rioting injured four people, including two in serious condition after being stabbed.

Sectarian fighting began in Gujarat on Feb. 27, when Muslims set fire to a train carrying Hindu activists returning from a pilgrimage. Most of those killed have been Muslims, many burned alive and their businesses and homes destroyed by Hindu mobs.
