2 Saints hurt at training camp...Jimenez wins Senior British Open...Thomas wins Tour de France
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — New Orleans Saints receiver Travin Dural and center Cameron Tom have been injured at training camp. Both went down with apparent upper body injuries during practice today. Both players were able to walk with trainers off the practice field. Also walking off the field shortly before practice ended was starting left tackle Terron Armstead, but it wasn’t clear if he was injured or struggling with hot conditions.
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Miguel Angel Jimenez (AHN’-hehl hee-MEHN’-ehz) has won the Senior British Open, edging defending champion Bernhard Langer (LAHN’-gur) by one shot. Jimenez dropped only one stroke on the way to a final-round 3-under 69 and ended on 12-under 276. Americans Kirk Triplett and Scott McCarron tied for third alongside Canada’s Stephen Ames. All three finished on 10 under.
PARIS (AP) — Geraint Thomas has won his first Tour de France title. The Welsh rider with Team Sky successfully defended his lead over second-placed Tom Dumoulin in today’s mostly ceremonial final ride into Paris. Four-time champion Chris Froome, Thomas’s teammate, finished third.
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Daniel Suarez has made NASCAR history. He became the first Mexican driver to start on the pole in the elite Cup series at Pocono Raceway. Suarez earned the top spot after the qualifying times of front-row starters Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch were tossed out because the cars failed post-qualifying inspection. Harvick and Busch were among 13 drivers whose cars failed inspection and were forced to start at the rear of the field.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Chipper Jones has led off the Baseball Hall of Fame inductions. The slugger managed to keep his emotions in check as he gazed down at his wife Taylor. She’s due to give birth to a son who will named Cooper and the due date is tomorrow. Also being enshrined today in Cooperstown, New York, are Jim Thome (TOH’-mee), Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell.
