Civil lawsuit still looms for man acquitted of manslaughter

September 1, 2018

LAUREL, Miss. (AP) — A south Mississippi man acquitted of manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend still faces a civil lawsuit.

WDAM-TV reports relatives of 23-year-old Katherine Sinclair are suing Greg Burroughs over Sinclair’s shooting death in June 2017 in the garage of Burroughs’ Laurel house.

A Franklin County jury acquitted Burroughs Tuesday after a multi-day trial. Burroughs says Sinclair shot herself.

Prosecutors argued that Sinclair feared Burroughs, that both had quarreled, and that some evidence suggested he’d staged the shooting.

Defense lawyer Tracey Klein says some of the prosecution’s case was “speculation” and there wasn’t enough evidence to prove Burroughs guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The standard of proof is lower in a civil lawsuit for a wrongful death, though.
