Elmore listed for Wooden Award

HUNTINGTON — Marshall Thundering Herd men’s basketball player Jon Elmore is a preseason candidate for national player of the year.

Elmore was one of 50 players named to the watch list for the John R. Wooden Award.

Last season, the 6-foot-3 senior guard from Charleston set Marshall season records for points (816), assists (244), free throws (232) and free throw attempts (281) while averaging 22.7 points, 6.8 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game. Of all of the players returning to college basketball for the 2018-19 season, Elmore ranked second last season in points and first in total assists.

He made the All C-USA first team and was the league tournament Most Valuable Player.

West Virginia University junior forward Sagaba Konate is also on the top-50 list.
