MOSCOW (AP) _ Russian customs officials seized 1,000 turtles from a man who allegedly tried to smuggle them from Russia's Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad into Poland, a news report said Thursday.

The man, a citizen of the Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan, didn't have proper customs clearance for the turtles and was arrested Wednesday. The turtles were handed over to a zoo in Kaliningrad, the Interfax news agency said.

Authorities have caught people trying to smuggle turtles out of Central Asia several times. Smugglers say there is a high demand for turtle shells and turtle meat among rich Russians and westerners.
