Utah system will track processing of rape kits
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah authorities are unveiling a new system for sexual assault victims to track how their rape kit is being analyzed.
The Department of Public Safety announced Wednesday that the system will track every sexual assault kit in the state and allow people to anonymously monitor the status of their particular kit.
The system is the latest measure amid a backlog of rape kits in recent years. In some cases, it’s taken up to a decade for kits to be tested.
Authorities say the new system will provide real-time information as the kits move from the hands of authorities through forensic labs.
The system was mandated by a law passed by the state Legislature last year.
The law also requires Utah authorities to send all rape kits to the state crime lab within 30 days, starting July 1.
