MIAMI (AP) _ Miami Mayor Joe Carollo, who faces a domestic violence charge for allegedly throwing a hard object at his wife last month, said he will run for re-election.
Shortly after his wife, Maria Ledon Carollo, filed for divorce in November, the mayor said he would not seek re-election. However, he said progress made during his four years in office helped him change his mind.
``There are more growth and investors in the city today that in its entire history,″ he said Tuesday. ``Taxes are at their lowest in 30 years, and the crime rate is its lowest since the mid-1960s.″
Carollo would not say if he would drop out of the race if found guilty on the misdemeanor simple battery charge, but he said he doesn’t think the case will cost him a victory.
The criminal charge is punishable by a maximum one-year in county jail. As a first-time offender, Carollo is likely to face less.
