Area volleyball sectional draw

The IHSAA announced pairings for the volleyball sectionals on Sunday. In area play, La Porte meets Mishawaka in an opener of the Class 4A La Porte Sectional, and Michigan City plays Merrillville in the first round of the Class 4A Hobart Sectional. New Prairie faces Jimtown in a Class 3A Mishawaka Marian Sectional opener, and Marquette meets the host Cherokees in the first round of the Class A Morgan Township Sectional. Westville plays Kouts in another opener at Morgan Township, and LaCrosse faces the host Cavaliers in a Class A Culver Sectional opener. South Central meets Triton in another first-round match at Culver. Sectionals run Oct. 9, 11 and 13.

City volleyball third, NP fifth at Warsaw

The Michigan City volleyball team finished third and New Prairie placed fifth in the 16-team Warsaw Invitational on Saturday. John Glenn took 12th. Emily Kinney (19 kills, 46 assists, 18 digs) and Reece Shirley (33 kills, 20 assists, 29 digs) were named to the all-tournament team for the Wolves, while Elise Swistek made the team for the Cougars. Alexa Sparks had five aces and Hannah Noveroske five solo blocks for M.C. Both teams were 3-1 on the day. City defeated John Glenn, Tippecanoe Valley and Reeths-Puffer (Michigan) in two games, while losing to Mishawaka Marian in three.

New Prairie beat South Bend St. Joseph and Wheeler in two games, and North Judson in three games, and lost to Reeths-Puffer in two games. Swistek paced the Cougars with 46 kills on the day, and Olivia Kelly had 27 kills and five aces. Sarah Fronk tallied 69 assists, and Shaye Tolch added 22 assists. Libero Josie Troy had 35 digs in the invite, and Katie Hancock had 22 digs and eight blocks.

Warsaw topped Mishawaka Marian in three games in the invite final.

Blazers Kenney commits to Furman

Marquette senior guard Colin Kenney committed to Division I Furman for basketball after a weekend visit to the South Carolina school. Kenney averaged 21.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game with 60 3-point field goals last season. The Paladins were 23-10 last season with a 13-5 record in the Southern Conference.

Blazers Dig Pink for Marquette volleyball

Marquette volleyball will hold its Dig Pink Night on Wednesday when the Blazers host Kouts. The JV match is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity match to follow. The Dig Pink initiative is hosted in conjunction with the Side-Out Foundation. Funds raised for Side-Out go toward a clinical trial specifically for patients with stage 4 breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease and the least funded of research. Fans are encouraged to wear pink apparel on Wednesday. The Blazers have set a goal of $1,000. Donations may be made on Marquette’s Dig Pink site (https://giving.side-out.org/campaigns/14554#/) or in person on Wednesday.

Glenn football loses to Lancers

John Glenn’s football team fell 55-14 at LaVille on Friday night. Nathan Creed had a touchdown run for the Falcons (0-7, 0-4 Northern Indiana Conference), and he threw a touchdown pass to Garrett West. Samuel Thomas went 2-for-2 on PATs. The Lancers improved to 4-3. Glenn next hosts South Bend Clay next Friday for Senior Night.

Soccer sectional pairings set

Sectional pairings for boys and girls soccer sectionals have been set.

On Monday, host Penn plays La Porte’s boys at 6 p.m. On Tuesday at LaVille (Newton Park), Marquette’s boys face Washington Township at 5, while Westville’s boys meet Bremen at 7 Tuesday at Newton Park. The Blazers girls play Morgan Township at 5 Tuesday at Wheeler. The Blackhawks girls face the host Bearcats in Tuesday’s second game at 7 at Wheeler. The Michigan City boys take on Chesterton at 5 Tuesday at Portage.

The Michigan City girls open against Merrillville at 7 on Thursday at Valparaiso with La Porte’s girls meeting the Penn-South Bend Adams winner that night at 6 in the South Bend Riley Sectional at Jackson Intermediate School.

Blackhawks boys soccer edges O-D

Westville’s boys soccer team topped Oregon-Davis 2-1 on Friday in Westville. The Blackhawks’ Blake Henderson and Elliot Bogart both netted a goal, and Andrew Henderson had an assist. Westville goalie Carson Miller recorded seven saves. O-D’s Dennis Cooley posted a goal, and keeper Nolan Green had two saves.

Westville girls soccer loses regular-season finale

Westville’s girls soccer team fell 10-0 to Hebron in the regular-season finale on Saturday. The Blackhawks’ Reina Steppe earned 11 saves and had a 69 percent save percentage, and Sydney Patla made five saves and had a 50 percent save percentage.

Night Golf at Valley Hills

Night Golf at Valley Hills Golf Course in Rolling Prairie will be Friday. Tee off is at dark around 7 p.m. The public is welcomed. Interested people are asked to call ahead for reservations if you want, but it’s not required. First place is a 2019 season membership to Valley Hills Golf Course.
