Promoted Watford hire Quique Sanchez Flores as new coach

WATFORD, England (AP) — Watford hired Quique Sanchez Flores as the new coach on Friday after contract extension talks broke down with Slavisa Jokanovic, who guided the club back into the English Premier League this season.

The negotiations with Jokanovic stalled on salary.

The 50-year-old Sanchez Flores, a former Spain defender, coached Atletico to the 2010 Europa League title. Also on his resume were jobs at Valencia, Benfica, Al-Ain, and most recently, a second stint with Getafe, which lasted less than two months before he resigned in February.

Jokanovic, a former Chelsea defender, was Watford’s fourth coach of the season, contracted in October. The Serb led the club to runner-up in the Championship to Bournemouth, and promotion to the EPL.

“Watford FC would like to take this opportunity to thank former head coach Slavisa Jokanovic, along with assistants Ruben Martinez and Javier Pereira, for an outstanding contribution to the success of the club,” the club said in a statement.

Jokanovic tweeted: “Thank you to Watford FC fans, players and staff for their support during this season. I’m proud to have had the chance to help put this club back where they truly deserve to be.”
