40 years in Florida terror attack conviction
TAMPA, Florida (AP) — A Florida man convicted of trying to buy weapons in 2011 for a planned terror attack in Tampa has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison.
Sami Osmakac was sentenced Wednesday.
In May, jurors found him guilty of attempted possession of a weapon of mass destruction and possession of an unregistered machine gun.
Osmakac was arrested in 2012 after authorities said he tried to buy weapons, including a car bomb and an AK-47, from an undercover agent he thought was an arms dealer.
During the three-week trial, jurors heard from psychiatrists who said Osmakac is mentally ill. Prosecutors also played videos recorded by a confidential informant.
