Lady O battles wet conditions at state
The Beatrice girls golf team sits in 11th place after a rainy first round at the NSAA Class B State Golf Tournament at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
Beatrice shot a team score of 449, which puts them just one stroke behind Omaha Skutt -- who Beatrice has defeated this season.
Omaha Duchesne leads the way in the team standings. Their score of 330 is comfortably ahead of Gering’s 360 and Elkhorn’s 377. Scottsbluff is in fourth at 380 and Aurora is in fifth at 422.
Sidney is in sixth, Hastings is in seventh, York is in eighth, Omaha Gross is in nine and Omaha Skutt is in 10th. The Lady O are currently ahead of 12th place Columbus Lakeview by 10 strokes.
Beatrice coach Dick Stuart said he thinks his team let the conditions affect them.
“We just kept finding ways to make big numbers,” Stuart said. “Even a few times when we weren’t in trouble, we found ways to make big numbers. Things just didn’t go our way today like they did at districts.”
Sydney Southwick is leading the way for Beatrice with an 18-hole score of 107. Payton Neunaber is next best for Beatrice with a 113 while Blake Trusty shot a 114 and Mackenzie Barnard shot a 115.
Abby Jones rounded out the scoring for Beatrice with a 139.
“The biggest thing we have to do now is understand there is nothing we can do about the first day,” Stuart said. “We are going to find out if we want to compete or accept finishing 11th. I hope we compete like we did a week ago.”
Stuart said playing poorly at state is still better than not making state at all.
“I think we can still build on winning a district title and playing at state,” Stuart said. “It feels a lot better playing right now than it would if our season had wrapped up last week.”
Norris had two individual qualifiers in Class B. Senior Lauren Havlat is currently tied for 14th with an 18-hole score of 93. Her teammate, junior Emma Severson, shot a 111.
Omaha Duchesne currently owns three of the top four spots in the individual standigns. Anna Boor is in first after a 74 while Lauren Goertz is third with an 80 and Bridget Duffy is fourth with an 82. Aurora’s Danica Badura currently sits in second with a 77.
The Class B State Tournament is scheduled for one more round on Tuesday -- weather permitting.
“It sounds like it going to be a little wetter and a little colder,” Stuart said. “I know they will do everything they can to get the second round in, but there is a lot of standing water already after today.”
The Sunland also has two players competing in the Class C State Tournament in North Platte.
Johnson County Central’s Erika Cruz is tied for 26th after an opening round of 101 while Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer’s Kaitlyn Frey turned in an opening round score of 128.
Ogallala’s Harley Hiltibrand and Mitchell’s Kenzey Kanno are tied for the individual lead in Class C with scores of 83.
