MONTREAL (AP) _ Jeff Hackett made 17 saves for his second straight shutout and Vladimir Malakhov and Brian Savage scored power-play goals as the Montreal Canadiens beat the New York Rangers 3-0 on Saturday night.

Vincent Damphousse had the other goal with an empty-netter for the Canadiens, who won their fourth straight at home. Saku Koivu had two assists.

The Canadiens, who won for the ninth time in 11 games, are now just three games below .500 at 17-20-7. They were 10 games below the .500 mark at Christmas.

Hackett made 23 saves to blank Washington on Friday night. Since being acquired from Chicago in November, Hackett's goals-against average has dropped from 3.78 to below 2.65.

Malakhov opened the scoring at 7:34 of the first. With Chris Tamer in the penalty box for cross-checking, Malakhov's slap shot beat Dan Cloutier high to the stick side.

The Canadiens, who were 2-for-4 on the power play, scored again early in the third. After Cloutier made two saves, Savage lofted a high backhand for his ninth goal of the season and third in as many games.

The Rangers missed a good opportunity to tie the game early in the second when they had a two-man advantage and managed only one shot on net.

The last time Montreal recorded back-to-back shutouts was in 1991.
