Monarchs Squeak Past Lynx in 67-66 Victory
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ Yolanda Griffith had 18 points to lead the Sacramento Monarchs to a 67-66 win over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday after a video review showed Nicole Ohlde’s layup came after the buzzer.
DeMya Walker added 15 points for the Monarchs, who improved to 3-0.
Katie Smith had a game-high 23 points for the Lynx (1-2).
Officials originally called Ohlde’s basket good, but reversed the ruling after reviewing tape of the play.
The Monarchs opened up a 10-point lead in the second half, but were unable to put the Lynx away. Ohlde’s basket gave Minnesota a 66-65 lead with 1:31 left, but Griffith made a scoop shot with 25.1 seconds remaining.
After Sacramento’s Nicole Powell missed a pair of free throws with 9 seconds left, Ohlde was alone under the basket but her shot came too late.
Minnesota built a 12-point lead early in the first half, and Smith had three 3-pointers and 11 points in the first 11 minutes. The Monarchs went on a 21-2 run to pull ahead and led 35-33 at halftime.
