Salazar Retains Flyweight Title
RESISTENCIA, Argentina (AP) _ Carlos Salazar of Argentina outpointed Mexico’s Everaldo Morales by unanimous decision Friday night to retain the World Boxing Organization flyweight crown.
Morales, younger and faster than Salazar, attacked constantly with straights and jabs to the head and clearly won the fifth and ninth rounds.
But for most of the fight Salazar circled around his opponent, giving him few chances to land good blows.
Lefty Salazar scored good punches in the second, third and sixth rounds.
Judge Antonio Bernardo of Brazil scored 116-113, Colombia’s Tulio Ruiz made it 116-112, and Carlos Rodriguez of Argentina had it 116-115.
Both fighters weighed in at 111 1/2 pounds.
Salazar’s record stands at 46-7-3 with 18 knockouts. Morales is now 12-3-2 with 10 knockouts.
