Arkansas edges St. John’s 4-3 to win Stillwater Regional
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Joe Serrano drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout in the ninth inning, and Arkansas held on to defeat St. John’s 4-3 on Sunday night and win the Stillwater Regional.
Arkansas (38-22) won its third straight game to advance to the round of 16 for the first time since 2012. The Razorbacks will face the winner of the Springfield Regional.
Brett McAfee singled off Joe Kuzia (3-2) to lead off the top of the ninth. Red Storm closer Thomas Hackimer came in and gave up Michael Bernal’s single, and Clark Eagan sacrificed the runners over. After an intentional walk, Arkansas took the lead on Serrano’s groundout to shortstop.
Tyler Spoon hit a towering solo home run over the screen above the left-field wall to give the Razorbacks a 3-0 lead over the Red Storm (41-16) in the sixth. St. John’s tied it in the seventh on Robbie Knightes’ RBI single.
Reliever James Teague (6-4) earned the win, and Zach Jackson struck out the side in the ninth for his eighth save.
