Berea Soccer Player Dies in Lightning Strike
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) _ An 18-year-old Berea College woman soccer player died Friday after being struck by lightning during practice on Thursday.
Haley Brooke Herring, of Summerville, Ga., was struck just before 6 p.m. EDT Thursday, Berea spokesman Ed Ford said.
Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams had been practicing but were leaving the field after thunderstorms were spotted in the distance, Ford said.
``There was no indication at all that the storm was on top of the area,″ Ford said.
Herring, a sophomore chemistry major who also was a basketball cheerleader last year, was taken to Berea Hospital and then to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where she died about 6:20 a.m. Friday, according to Fayette County Coroner Dennis Penn.
No other players were reported injured.
Ford said coaches and others who witnessed the lightning strike said they had taken all necessary precautions.
``There’s just no way to anticipate that something like this might occur,″ Ford said.
A memorial service for Herring was scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday at Phelps Stokes Chapel on the Berea campus.
