De Swardt, Shett in BostonCup Final
WELLESLEY, Mass. (AP) _ Mariaan de Swardt of South Africa defeated third-seeded Lisa Raymond of Wayne, Pa., 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 Saturday to advance to the final of the BostonCup.
De Swardt’s victory continued a string of upsets in the WTA Corel Tour tournament at Babson College.
Seventh-seeded Barbara Schett of Austria beat Cara Black of Zimbabwe 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
De Swardt and Schett will play for the championship Sunday.
Raymond took the opening set when de Swardt double-faulted at set point. Afterward, de Swardt was in charge.
``I wanted to play aggressively,″ de Swardt said. ``I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy match. I mixed things up and tried to set up my forehand.″
In the third set, both players stayed on serve until the 11th game. De Swardt then earned a crucial break point when Raymond double-faulted. In the final game, de Swardt smashed three cross-court forehand winners to win the match.
In the other semifinal, Shett took the first set by attacking the net. Black broke her twice in the second set to force a third.
``I was surprised at how well she charged the net,″ Black said. ``I had trouble picking up her backhand. It was a great shot for her.″
In the third set, Schett stayed on the baseline and broke Black in the second and fourth games for a 4-1 lead. She held in the seventh and broke Black again in the final game to clinch the victory.
