July 8, 2014

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — A project to demolish and clean up a former oil refinery and chemical plant is underway in west Laramie.

The Laramie Boomerang reported Tuesday (http://tinyurl.com/q2ydkrp ) demolition began late last month on the Midwest/Standard Oil refinery and United States Yttrium (IT’-tree-uhm) plant.

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality says the property is contaminated with metals, trace asbestos and other substances.

The Laramie Rivers Conservation District bought part of the property to remove the buildings and clean it up.

The district says the soil and groundwater are polluted but contamination levels in the buildings aren’t dangerous.

Once demolition is complete, the district plans to seek federal funds to remove contaminated soil and monitor water wells.

They Wyoming Department of Transportation plans to buy another part of the property to build a viaduct.
