American Killed by Mayor’s Bodyguard
CEBU, Philippines (AP) _ An American resort owner was killed Friday by the bodyguard of a mayor with whom he had an ongoing feud.
Jerome Goodman, 54, was shot by the bodyguard of Mayor Marcelo Abrenica in the resort town of Moalboal, 360 miles south of Manila, police said.
Goodman’s hometown was not immediately available.
Moalboal police chief Manuel Lawas said Goodman was erecting a billboard at his resort, Philippine Dive and Tours, when Abrenica arrived and ordered him to tear it down.
Goodman refused and the two men came to blows, Lawas said. The mayor’s bodyguard, Mario Dumugho, tried unsuccessfully to intervene, and eventually fired his pistol at Goodman, hitting him once in the head.
Mayor Abrenica operates a nearby resort, and the two apparently were rivals.
The town council had passed an ordinance requiring foreigners to pay $385 for a business permit, police said. Goodman refused to pay, and the mayor ordered his billboard demolished.
In response, Goodman filed charges against the council and sued for $57,700 in damages.
Goodman was putting the billboard up again Friday when the mayor arrived.
