Hollings Holds On to SC Senate

November 4, 1998

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Democrats scored two huge victories in South Carolina on Tuesday, knocking off Republican Gov. David Beasley and giving longtime incumbent Ernest ``Fritz″ Hollings another term in the U.S. Senate.

Beasley, who made enemies for his opposition of video gambling, fell to Jim Hodges in an $8 million governor’s race _ perhaps the costliest in state history. Hollings, at 76 one of the last Democratic lions of the South, survived a tough challenge by Rep. Bob Inglis.
