Emergency medical facility opens in North Adams

May 20, 2014

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (AP) — Residents of northern Berkshire County in need of urgent medical care have a local option for the first time in almost two months.

Pittsfield-based Berkshire Medical Center on Monday opened a satellite emergency facility in the former North Adams Regional Hospital, which closed suddenly seven weeks ago.

BMC spokesman Mike Leary told the Berkshire Eagle (http://bit.ly/1vyRIyN ) that a “steady but not heavy” stream of patients used the facility on its first day.

North Adams Regional Hospital closed on March 28 with three days’ notice, leaving 530 workers jobless and the region without local emergency care.

Patients instead had to travel 30 to 40 minutes to reach an emergency room in either Pittsfield or Bennington, Vermont.
