FRISCO, Texas _ Scott Linehan is out as offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys only days after coach Jason Garrett sent mixed messages about the oft-criticized assistant’s future. Garrett said in a statement released by the team Friday that he and Linehan had discussions this week and mutually agreed that a change was needed. Linehan just finished his fifth season with the Cowboys, who after a 3-5 start rebounded to win the NFC East. Dallas won a wild-card game before a 30-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last Saturday. MINNEAPOLIS _ The San Antonio Spurs, who’ve won seven of their last 10 games, visit Minnesota, where they lost by 39 points to the Timberwolves in November. By Brian Hall. UPCOMING: 700 words, photos. Game starts at 7 p.m. CST.
OXFORD, Miss. _ Mississippi’s Kermit Davis is getting another crack at a big-time men’s basketball coaching job nearly 30 years after the lowest point in his career. Two months into the season, Davis has the Rebels in the Top 25 for the first time since 2013. In 1991 he resigned at Texas A&M amid an NCAA investigation which resulted in Davis receiving a two-year show cause penalty. Now, his No. 18 Rebels will try to earn their 11th win in 12 games when they face Arkansas on Saturday. By David Brandt. SENT: 940 words, with photos.
DURHAM, N.C. _ Top-ranked Duke hopes its defense doesn’t slip without point guard Tre Jones _ for however long he’s out. The Blue Devils were just getting back to playing the kind of tough man-to-man defense that had been their trademark. They host defensive-minded Virginia on Saturday. Jones injured his right shoulder in a loss this week to Syracuse. Jones has had five three-steal games, including four in the 5½ minutes before he was hurt against Syracuse. He was so relentless against Texas Tech that coach Chris Beard instructed his players to pass to a teammate instead of bringing the ball up against Jones, who had six steals in that game.
