’After Life’ with Ricky Gervais and new season of ‘Tin Star’ top viewing choices

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Netflix comedy series starring Ricky Gervais and a second season of “Tin Star” on Amazon Prime are among the week’s top viewing choices.

“After Life” (Friday, March 8, Netflix): Gervais is the creator, executive producer, director and star of this comedy. He plays Tony, whose perfect life is shattered when his wife, Lisa (Kerry Godliman), dies. After contemplating suicide, he decides to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes. Although he starts out viewing this as a kind of super power, fueled by a lack of caring, his master plan is challenged by everyone trying to help and save the nice guy they used to know. Also in the cast are Tom Basden as Tony’s brother-in-law, Tony Way as his best friend, David Bradley as his dad and Ashley Jensen as his dad’s nurse.

“Juanita” (Friday, March 8, Netflix): Alfre Woodard has the title role in this film about a woman who leaves her grown kids and hits the road in search of a fresh start. Directed by Clark Johnson (“The Wire,” “The Shield”), the drama also stars Blair Underwood. The screenplay by Roderick M. Spencer is based on Sheila Williams’ novel “Dancing on the Edge of the Roof.”

“Tin Star” (Friday, March 8, Amazon Prime): Part action thriller and part dark comedy, the crime drama starring Tim Roth kicks off its second season with an episode titled “Prairie Gothic.” Roth plays Jim Worth, a former London undercover detective who became the new police chief of Little Big Bear, a small town at the edge of the Canadian Rockies. But when under the influence of alcohol, Jim slips into the persona of Jack Devlin, a violent alter ego. The new season opens with Jack bleeding on a mountainside, having been shot by Anna (Abigail Lawrie), the daughter of Jim and Angela (Genevieve O’Reilly). Also returning is Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”) as Elizabeth.
