Man Takes Hostages Aboard Plane

October 2, 1998

PARIS (AP) _ A disgruntled former employee hijacked a company plane today and took 15 hostages, forcing the pilot to land at an airport outside the southern French city of Marseille, officials said.

The Fokker-20 plane was on a flight from Paris to the southern city of Istres when it was forced to land at Marseille-Marignane Airport, police said.

The hijacker, who was armed with a knife, had released at least 10 hostages but continued to hold the pilot and an undetermined number of other people, police said on customary anonymity.

Police and firefighters were deployed around the plane, owned by Serge Dassault Aviation, a manufacturer of fighter jets.

The plane ferries employees between the corporate headquarters near Paris and the company’s plant in Istres.
