El Agave opens on West Evans Street
FLORENCE, S.C. — The owners of Mi Tierra San Jose Restaurant have brought another restaurant to the Pee Dee community, this time in downtown Florence.
El Agave Mexican Restaurant, at 147 W. Evans St., opened this month and has since seen growing traffic.
Brenda Perez, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband, Oscar, and cousins, said the group was impressed with Florence’s growth downtown and wanted to be a part of the continued revitalization effort.
“Downtown is growing more and more,” Perez said. “We’ve always been on the other side of town [Mi Tierra at Celebration Boulevard], so we decided to open this because it is close to a lot of people that work at the city complex, the hospital and that way they don’t have to drive across town for lunch. It’s a great opportunity and it was a great timing for us.”
Perez said the menu at El Agave will look very similar to that of Mi Tierra. The restaurant serves tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, burritos, nachos, chicken, steak, seafood and other authentic Mexican dishes.
“It’s the same menu, but there are some things that we do different here that make us special and unique,” Perez said. “For example, we serve fish tacos here, which is something we don’t do at Mi Tierra. Almost every day, we make special dishes that aren’t on the menu. That way it’s not just stuff we have on the menu, but different things for our customers to try.”
Perez said she expects the restaurant to receive its alcohol and liquor license within the next couple of weeks.
“I worked at Mi Tierra for 11 years, so it’s different, but I like it,” Perez said. “At Mi Tierra, it’s so busy from the time we open till we close. Here, it’s calmer. There’s a different atmosphere. It’s starting to pick up at lunch. I like it and it’s really nice being in downtown. We’ve always worked with my dad, Jose Perez. When this opportunity came for us to open downtown, we jumped on it.”
El Agave is Spanish for a type of succulent plant from Mexico and the southwestern parts of the United States. The Agave is used to make things like tequila, agave syrup and pulque.
Perez said her favorite part about being in the food industry is getting to meet different people each day.
“I thought about doing something else, but I just really liked being in the restaurant business,” Perez said. “Every day is the same thing, but you’re always meeting new faces and getting to build relationships with your customers. I just really like that.”
The restaurant will tentatively be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday; 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Just like at Mi Tierra, El Agave also does to-go orders. To place a to-go order, call 843-472-5268.
