Volleyball: D’Hanis falls in state semifinals
Water Valley used crucial runs in all three sets and defeated D’Hanis 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 Wednesday in a UIL Class A state semifinal match at the Culwell Center in Garland.
D’Hanis (32-14) was making its second straight appearance at the state tournament and each time lost in the semifinal to a longtime West Texas power. A year ago, the Cowgirls lost in five sets to eventual state champion Bronte.
The Wildcats (31-11) will play Neches at 3 p.m. Thursday in the state final.
Water Valley used a 5-0 run to snap an 18-18 tie and build a 23-18 lead in the third set. D’Hanis closed within 23-21 before the Wildcats tallied the final two points to close out the contest.
D’Hanis led 17-15 in the second set before Water Valley reeled off a 10-1 run, including scoring nine unanswered points. In the opening frame, D’Hanis led 10-1 and 14-7 before Water Valley responded with a 10-1 spurt for a 17-15 lead. The teams were tied at 19 before water Valley scored four straight to build a cushion before prevailing.
Setter Cassandra Zerr had 23 assists, 12 digs and five aces to pace D’Hanis. Chloe Cowan added 13 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Shaelyn Nuckles had seven kills and Jewel Randolph added six.
