Annual vigil for the homeless to be held on winter solstice

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A memorial vigil is planned for this week to honor the 37 homeless people who died in the Portland, Maine, area this past year.

The annual candlelight vigil will be held 4 p.m. Thursday in downtown Portland. The Portland Press Herald reports the 23-year tradition gathers residents on the evening of the winter solstice to mourn those who died and to reaffirm a commitment to finding everyone a place to live.

The event is sponsored by the city of Portland’s Health and Human Services Department, Greater Portland Health, Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and Preble Street Resource Center.
