Two Columbus men early Monday morning were pronounced dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash occurring about 5 miles east of Monroe along Nebraska Highway 22, according to information released by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle, 26-year-old Frank Brave Heart, was driving west on the highway in a 2002 Ford Explorer about 2:15 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and went into a north ditch, striking a tree. The lone front-seat passenger was 26-year-old Christian Schwager.

Seat belts were in use by both occupants and there was heavy rain in the area at the time of the accident, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Monroe Fire and Rescue Department. The incident remains under investigation at this time.
