WASHINGTON (AP) — Rick Santorum, who came in second place in the 2012 Republican presidential nominating contest, has raised about $607,000 for his new bid.

That's according to a fundraising report filed Wednesday with federal regulators. Documents show that Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator who announced his campaign in late May, spent more than half of the money he took in.

For his 2012 bid, Santorum raised about $23 million and prevailed in many primary states before ultimately losing to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

He's one of an expected 17 contenders for the Republican nomination. Most presidential candidates must file their initial fundraising reports by midnight Wednesday.
