Florence-Darlington Tech offers aid to displaced Virginia College students
FLORENCE, S.C. – Florence-Darlington Technical College is offering assistance to former Virginia College students looking to continue their education.
After Virginia College’s closure announcement in December, FDTC offered in a Facebook post to help the displaced students.
“As a community partner, we want to ensure these students would be able to continue their education with minimal disruption within the accreditation guidelines that governs our institution,” said Genell Gause, the interim associate vice president for student enrollment management and services.
The Dec. 12 Facebook post said students can earn credit through examination through a college-level examination (CLEP) test, which is administered by the College Board, and the college is using its credit through experiential learning process.
Due to Virginia College’s accreditation, FDTC cannot accept transfer credits, Gause said. However, students can take the CLEP test to gain up to 16 hours of course credit. Students can take CLEP tests for subjects such as psychology, biology, college algebra and English.
The CLEP test costs $88 per test with a $25 proctoring fee. The technical college will waive the proctoring fee for Virginia College students.
Students can also receive credit through the Prior Learning program, which allows students to earn credits for general education courses through passing an exam through an individual department, Gause said.
The spring semester will start on Jan. 9 with 15-week classes. The college also has 12-week classes starting on Jan. 30 and eight-week classes starting on March 18.
Students seeking to begin classes on Jan. 9 must be enrolled by Jan. 7-8, Gause said.
Those interested in attending the college during the spring semester should apply online at www.fdtc.edu.
Students should provide a copy of their official high school and Virginia College transcripts. Students should also complete FAFSA for the 2018-19 school year. FDTC’s FAFSA code is 003990.
