Canadian Lowers Speedskating Record

March 11, 2001

KEARNS, Utah (AP) _ Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada lowered the world record in the men’s 1,000 meters to 1 minute, 8.28 seconds on Sunday to win the event at the world single-distance speedskating championships.

Wotherspoon took six-hundreths of a second off the previous mark of 1:08.34, set March 3 by teammate Michael Ireland at the Olympic oval in Calgary, Alberta.

It was the sixth world record to fall, in five events, since the Utah Olympic Oval opened Friday.
