Suspected Gunrunners Arrested
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) _ Police reported Sunday arresting five members of a major gunrunning group, including the leader, and recovering a cache of firearms from a cemetery.
They said they arrested Lu Chao Chin, 35, and four members of his gang Friday in an apartment raid after a surveillance of several weeks.
Police said the gang had operated since 1983. If convicted of gunrunning, they could be sentenced to death.
Police said Lu drew them a map of a cemetery in Taichung, 93 miles southwest of Taipei, showing where the gang buried two submachine guns, an M- 16 rifle, six rifle grenades, 10 hand grenades, 11 pistols and 2,000 rounds of ammunition.
Police believe the weapons were smuggled in from the Philippines for sale to local gangsters.
