Recyclable plastic piling up in Rockford
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — The plastic is piling up in Rockford.
The Rockford Register Star reports that Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful finds itself with more than 7 tons of plastic at its recycling center with no place to send it after a decision made by China nearly a year ago to refuse shipments of recyclable plastics from the West.
People still drop off recyclables at the nonprofit center. But the recyclables haven’t been taken away ever since China implemented a policy to ban post-consumer plastic and mixed paper imports because the quality of the material it was receiving was deteriorating or was contaminated with non-recyclable material.
Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Executive Director Pam Osborne says people are still encouraged to drop off plastics as a way to keep the community clean.
