Lucy T. Davis fourth-grader wins spelling bee
FLORENCE, S.C. – Bryson Thomas spelled the word “comfortable” correctly on Nov. 17 and won the Florence One Schools 13th annual spelling bee for third- and fourth-grade students.
“I prepared by having my family quiz me on various words,” said Bryson, a fourth-grader at Lucy T. Davis Elementary School. “If I didn’t know a word, I started writing them down.”
The bee was hosted by North Visa Elementary School.
Round One, held at individual schools, included more than 800 students. Students attended 14 elementary schools in the district, including Palmetto Academy and Brockington Elementary School.
Only 150 students made it to the semifinal round. As students’ nerves increased, that number dwindled to 25.
Prizes included a trophy, a Scrabble game, money and more.
“This is huge for Bryson,” said his mother, Ester Thomas. “He will always remember this event.”
Kingston Cooper, a fourth grader of Delmae Elementary School, placed second. Brenner Kale, a fourth-grader at Carver Elementary School, placed third.
Sam Fryer, the organizer and creator of the event, said the event was created to “promote community and collaboration.”
