Matthews Shoots 7-under
Now, that is what Brandon Matthews had been searching for on the golf course.
The 24-year-old Dupont native shot his best round of the 2019 Web.com Tour season Thursday, firing a 7-under-par 65 in the first round of the Nashville Golf Open in Tennessee.
Matthews enters today in second place. He is one shot off leader Robby Shelton.
However, some of the field did not complete the first round, which was ultimately suspended due to darkness.
Regardless, Matthews got off to a spectacular start.
He made par on holes 10 through 17 before making birdie on 18, going into the turn at 1 under.
Matthews reeled off four straight birdies on holes 1-4, made par on No. 5, and then notched back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7 to finish 7 under.
Matthews played in last year’s Nashville Golf Open, too, shooting a 273 — 70, 70, 67, 66 — that earned him a tied-for-seventh-place finish and $17,141.67 in prize money.
The former Pittston Area state champion was struggling recently on the Web.com Tour, missing the cut at six tournaments in a row dating back to February.
Matthews is scheduled to tee off from No. 1 at 1:34 p.m. today at Nashville Golf & Athletic Club.
